Eyewitness Cameron Jackson describes the scene confronting the lunch rush in Sydney's CBD as a fire took hold on Wednesday.
A fire in a pizza oven which forced the evacuation of more than 1200 people and sent thick black smoke through Sydney’s CBD has been extinguished.
Firefighters were called to the 20-storey building, on the corner of Liverpool and Pitt streets, about 1pm after the fire broke out in the building.
The blaze was brought under control shortly after. By 2.30pm all office workers were allowed to return to the building and fire crews had left the scene. There were no injuries.
A number of inner-city roads which had been closed off have now reopened.
The blaze started in a pizza oven at Macchiato Pizza Bar & Grill, and firefighters who were first on the scene reported a remarkable amount of black smoke in the area, which billowed through CBD streets.

The pizza restaurant sustained considerable fire, smoke and water damage.
"Pizza ovens can have chimneys lined with large amounts of fats and oils, which produce enormous amounts of smoke," a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said.
"The building was evacuated. At this stage it appears accidental."
A fire in this pizza oven caused streets in the CBD to be evacuated.
Cameron Jackson, who works in a neighbouring building, was on his way to lunch when smoke started billowing from the cafe.
"And then as I walked across the street all of a sudden there was just smoke everywhere and I couldn’t see anything.

"I turned around and the whole floor above the pizza shop was just billowing, like a waterfall, just grey black smoke coming out of the building and all of a sudden sirens where everywhere and fire engines appearing everywhere."
All west-bound lanes of Liverpool Street were closed between Castlereagh Street and George Street, and Pitt Street was closed between Goulburn Street and Liverpool Street.
